Adventures in Canoeing

This year was our 10th anniversary.  For years we have planned to go on a tropical R&R sans kids for the big 10, but we wanted to go in the fall/winter rather than on our anniversary in August.  So since we did book a trip to Cancun, I wasn't expecting that we would do anything on the actual day.  But Tim, the amazing husband that he is, planned out a canoeing trip down the James river.  Now I love the outdoors, but I never would have thought of doing something like this.  But we had a blast!

Going into this trip, I was debating what camera to take because I knew the river was going to be beautiful.  I really wanted to have my nicer camera and lens with me, but decided to be on the safe side and take my old, half-working D70.  A few minutes into our trip, just as I was regretting not having a better camera and a wider angle lens, we capsized and my entire camera bag was submerged in the water. We seriously underestimated the power of those little tiny riffles!  So we lost a few things to the river current, including my flip flops, and though I was able to salvage some of the photos from my memory card, my camera did not come back to life.  At least not in that first month.  Maybe I will drag it out again- my phone, which also took the plunge, came back to life after a few weeks.  Anyways, it was fun and memorable, especially with the capsizing incident.  It was stunning and peaceful and we even went snorkeling (I had no idea you could snorkel in a river!)  And to cap it off, Tim cooked me a delicious bass...(actually, steak dinner but I couldn't resist the ref to Napoleon).  My husband is the best:)

Beach Weekend

Aug. 3-6, 2011
Our family taking our annual long weekend trip to VA beach.  One of my favorite memories about living in VA:)  This trip was kind of a last minute get away and we ended up staying in a hotel about 30 minutes away from the beach, but it was totally worth the two way drive every day.  And our kids loved staying in the hotel with the indoor mini pool- good times!
